DIAMOND CUT |
Brilliance determined the cut of a diamond. A collection of measurements and observations that determine the relationship between a diamond’s light finish, dimensions and performance. For most gemologists, they consider cut as the most essential characteristic because a diamond will have dulled brilliance if not cut accurately even if it has the perfect color and clarity.
Diamond Cut Importance
Diamond cut is essentially the most to consider since it has direct correlation to the diamond’s appearance. Ideal/Excellent cut grade proportions will receive the maximum amount of light in the viewer’s eye, hence it will appear more brilliant and more beautiful.
Diamond Anatomy |

|
Diameter. The width of the diamond as measured through the girdle.
Table. The largest facet of a gemstone.
Crown. The top portion of a diamond extending from the girdle to the table
Pavillion. The bottom portion of a diamond extending from the girdle to the cutlet.
Cutlet. The facet at the tip of a gemstone. The preferred cutlet is not visible with the unaided eye.
Depth. The length of a gemstone measured from the cutlet to the table.
Diamond Grade
The diamond cut is graded by GIA. There are five grades that you could choose from. Excellent which is only available for round brilliant dimaonds, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor.
AGS grades diamond slightly different. The grade it as Ideal, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor.
Light Return Properties:
1. Brilliance is refered to as the white light reflected through the surface of the diamond.
2. Scintillation is the sparkling pattern on a diamonds
3. Fire describes the flashes of rainbow-colored light which reflect off a well-cut diamond. |

The width and depth of a diamond’s cute grade goes beyond that. We need to use a three dimensional model to determine actual proportions and angles of a diamond. For the face-up appearance of a diamond – brightness, fire and scintillation, we are able to trace light behavior and measure it.
Two of the most important aspects of the cutting process is symmetry and polish. Symmetry grade is the alignment of the facets while Polish grade is the smoothness of the diamond’s facets.
In identifying the most beautiful diamond, look for a symmetry grade of excellent (EX), Very Good (VG) or Good (G). GIA graded diamonds are rated slightly different. For GIA diamonds, look for Ideal (ID), Very Good (VG) or Good (G). It is not advisable to purchase diamonds that have symmetry grades of Fair(F) or Poor (P). The alignment of their facets misdirects light so severly that it affects the diamond’s brilliance.
