Did you get an excellent pocket watch as a gift, or did you treat yourself to the Rolex you've always desired? Maybe you have a large collection of vintage and modern timepieces. Whether you have a single watch or a collection of many dozen, it is critical that you store your prized watches properly.

Continue reading for an in-depth guide on how to store your watches.

Clean Your Watches When Not in Use

Humidity and dust may cause problems with a watch's finely calibrated movements. Body oil as well as other oil-based items, such as lotions, can also be harmful. That is why you should clean your watch every time you remove it. Cleaning your watch will become second nature if you keep your cleaning supplies next to your watch safe.

If the watch is waterproof, wipe it with a gentle cloth and lukewarm water. To reach problematic areas, use a soft, wet child's toothbrush or toothpick. Rinse thoroughly and polish the crystal with a microfiber glass wipe. Water should not be allowed to get onto the leather strap. Avoid water if you have a vintage watch or if you are unsure if it is waterproof.

Keep Watches Wound and Lubricated

When not in use, it is critical to keep your watch greased and wound. Watchmakers are split on whether watches should be kept operating or not. One thing they all agree on is that they must be maintained and properly lubricated. A watch's movement is also its engine, and it, like any decent engine, requires regular maintenance to keep it working smoothly.

If you aren't going to wear your quartz watch for a time, always remove the battery. Use a high-quality watch winder if your watch contains several complexities, such as a moon phase, planetarium, or perpetual calendar.

Keep Valuable Documentations Safe

A watch's documentation and accessories will take up minimal space in a safe. They are well worth preserving safely since they significantly increase the resale value of a watch.

Separately labeled zip bags should be used to organize proofs of purchases, warranty certificates, authenticity certificates, guides, and hang tags (one for each watch). Bracelets, additional links, and straps should all be treated in the same way.

Fill each zip bag with color-coded silica desiccant packets and keep extras in the safe. They absorb harmful humidity and may be recharged or changed when their color changes. You may wish to keep your watch boxes elsewhere due to their size. All you have to do is keep them clean and dry. Add the desiccant sachets and keep note of which box corresponds to which watch.
