Lab grown diamonds, as the name suggests, are man-made diamonds created in a lab. Also known as lab-created diamonds, artificial diamonds, synthetic diamonds or cultivated diamonds, they too consist of carbon atom structures containing the same chemical and optical characteristics of natural diamonds. However, over time, the demand for lab grown diamonds have declined, causing the prices of these diamonds to drop as well. With the dip in prices in recent years, they may not be the best choice for clients who are concerned about the drop in prices of their diamonds.
The Making of Lab Grown Diamonds
Natural diamonds are formed through more than millions of years of extreme pressure and heat where carbon atoms become the beautiful diamonds that have been mined for years. Similarly, lab grown diamonds have been formed from being put through the same process of intense heat and pressure. However, the only difference is that this process is man-made and instead of millions of years, the diamonds are created in a few weeks. Here is what happens in a lab when cultivating diamonds:
In order to begin the process of forming lab grown diamonds, a diamond seed, which is a very small piece of diamond, is coated with pure carbon and sealed in a contained space with conditions specially designed to be extremely similar with where natural diamonds are formed – in the crust of Earth. For this process to take place and to achieve the diamond we are looking for, there are two different ways. The High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) makes use of intense heat and pressure. On the other hand, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) uses a concoction of chemical gases that break down and harden the diamond seed and the coat of carbon atoms, with crystalized carbon atoms as the end product.
Over a matter of weeks, the diamond seed becomes a cultivated diamond with an identical chemical make up with a natural diamond.
The Differences between Lab Grown Diamonds and Natural Diamonds
The first and most noticeable difference between lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds is the price. Although both diamonds are priced based on the same factors including the cut, clarity, carat weight, color, shape and certification, the fact that natural diamonds are mined makes the price much higher.
Comparatively to natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds have a much lower resale value unlike natural diamonds that retain at least a 50% of the original value. Lab grown diamonds hardly retain any value and might not be suitable for someone who is considering reselling their diamonds.
Although most gemologists are unable to tell them apart through merely their appearances, certification is always provided in order for consumers to identify the origins of the diamond.
